Bye, Bye Fruit Flies

Shoo – fly don’t bother me – I don’t know why, but I really don’t like having fruit flies. I bring home peaches and blueberries from the farmer’s market with some trepidation- excitement and a little bit of dread – I hope we don’t get fruit flies, I think.

I’ve tried washing the fruit – covering the fruit – keeping the fruit in the fridge. I’ve tried apple cider vinegar in a bowl covered with plastic wrap with holes poked in it and keeping basil near the fruit. I’ve tried domes and fruit storage containers.

Fruit dome

When you search for fruit fly prevention – you mostly find traps – I don’t want to trap them – I want them to just stay away. My wish has been answered.

Fruit Fly Sachets

Last week at the Sturbridge Farmers Market I discovered these fruit fly sachets – they are filled with a combination of scents – including lavender – that keep the flies away – Do you believe in magic? You will after you try these – I’ve had a bunch of bananas and a bowl of peaches out for 10 days – and not a fly in sight! They also smell great – Best $2 – I have probably ever spent – Link to their website below.

For DIY – you can try sachets filled with peppermint, lemongrass, lavender & whole cloves – or you could diffuse these essential oils – or try wax melts in those scents – Basically you are going for scents that flies don’t like -Eucalyptus is another one – but I personally don’t like that smell.

Happy Local Fruit Season – Thanks B-Organic!
