Covid College

Our youngest child graduated this weekend, after four years filled with sudden closures, temperature checks, cancellations, quarantines, remote learning, masks, PCR tests and vaccines.

It was not your typical New England college experience, by any means, but it was a valuable life lesson in making due, making the best of, and realizing that things happen every day that are out of your control. It was a lesson in protecting each other and a community and a hands on realization that we are all in this together.

The school also managed to pivot again and again as Covid cases waxed and waned. The final pivot was at commencement, when the temperatures soared to 97 degrees. Misting tents, water stations and huge fans appeared on the quad. The president urged everyone to take off their caps and move around as needed to stay cool. The speaker was unable to attend at the last moment and the address was delivered as a recording on a big screen. In some ways it was an appropriate ending for a Covid college experience.

Let’s just hope the monkey pox isn’t next for future classes
