Do you like Butter?
Buttercup Season has started – Technically ranunculus – but who wants to be bothered remembering that? Also poisonous to cattle. In the Pacific Northwest they call them Coyote Eyes. Some think it’s a weed, others a wildflower. I am in the latter camp.
Do you like butter? I was one of generations of children who held the flower up to my chin up see if I do. But of course, I did. My father mostly cooked out of Julia Child’s Cookbook . We slathered butter on everything from popovers to mushrooms and baked potatoes. We dipped lobster bits and artichoke leaves in it. We mixed it with lemon and herbs. After he died, one of my aunts commented. “He used so much butter” while shaking her head. Like it was the butter that killed him:)
My Kate Greenway, The Language of Flowers, paperback tells me that Buttercups symbolize humility and childishness, which I like. Thank you Dover Press, for this gem.
