Fun April Wrap Up - Tulips, Earth Day, Plein April and Palindrome Week

Week 18 Day 116 of 2024 - April 25

As a native New Yorker, April has always meant tulips to me. They bloom early and often in the city, where there are no deer to eat them and they are planted in window boxes and tree belts and in the Park Avenue Traffic Malls. As a member of the lily family there are 3,000 registered varieties. Cultivation began in the Netherlands in 1593- highlighted by Tulipmania in the 17th century as tulips became a coveted luxury item, but today they can be found around the world.

The Cicadas are coming

Trillions of Cicadas are expected in the Midwest and Southeast states from Mid May through late for the first time in 200 years. Cicadas have the longest life cycle of any insect, waiting 13 or 17 years to emerge, but once they're above ground, things move pretty fast. Once they emerge, they mate, lay eggs and die in about five to eight weeks. They are not harmful to humans or pets and actually are a valuable food source for birds and other predators and add nutrients to the soils as they decompose. .
