Hurray for Labor Day

September has always been my favorite month, no matter where I have lived. In the city, there was the excitement of back to school. New uniforms, book bags and school.supplies. Labor day was the end of summer and the start of the school year.

In the country, you can feel the change in the air. Apples ripen on the trees and the wild grapes scent the edge of the woods. Mums appear and fawns venture into the meadow on their own.

Our mother believed you should only wear white from Memorial day to Labor day. So our whites were always packed away on Labor day weekend until the next summer.

Thirty miles at sea, it was the time when we got the island back. The water and the weather are still warm, the summer crowds are gone and islanders can breathe a big sigh of relief. The first September I spent on island, I could not get over the fact that I had always left on Labor day- I had been missing the best time of the year. We were married the weekend after Labor day in the 80s and it felt like we had the whole island to ourselves. Apparently wearing white as a bride after Labor Day was allowed:)
