Hydrangea Season
Hydrangeas have been a summer / 4th of July staple in my life for decades. We used them for everything – from confetti to centerpieces to wedding bouquets. We arranged them in anything, from creamers to mason jars. The flower aquarium was my favorite. My grandmother taught me to clip the stems, dip them in alum and change the water to keep them hydrated indoors. As a child I thought it was magic how a wilted blossom could be brought back to life by trimming the stem. I use to dig up the spikes from the old railroad that ran along the shore for her to to put at the base of her plants to turn them purple. We watered them with the remains of gin & tonics tossed over the deck railing after drink & talk time and they thrived.
