Ides of March & St. Patrick's Day
Day 74 Week 12 of 2024 - March 15th
The Ides of March and St. Patrick’s Day
These two always fall in the same week
The Ides of March
The Ides of March is the 74th day in the Roman calendar, corresponding to 15 March. Ides simply referred to the first full moon of a given month. Since the Roman calendar was based on lunar cycles, a full moon usually fell between the 13th and 15th. In fact, the Ides of March once signified the new year, which meant celebrations and rejoicing. In 44 BC, it became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar, hence Shakespear’s line ‘Beware the Ides of March”
St. Patrick’s Day
St. Patrick’s Day observes of the death of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. The holiday has evolved into a celebration of Irish culture with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green. The First St. Patrick’s Day Parade was held in 1601 in a Spanish Colony that is now St. Augustine, Florida. St. Patrick was born in Britain and kidnapped by pirates and enslaved at age 16 and brought to Ireland. The legend is that as herded Sheep in isolation for his captors his Christianity blossomed as he prayed day and night.
