Mah Jongg Revival

Week 27 of 2025

Your grandmother’s Mah Jongg game is back - it’s great for improving cognitive skills and socializing. Mah Jongg sets are being sold everywhere from Hobby Lobby to Amazon -you can also find a great variety on eBay as well. Ideally it’s a four person game - but you can play easily with three and even two.

Find a game in your area and learn to play that version,

Here we give you a brief overview of American Mah Jongg.- and our favorite supplies. It’s easy to learn and unlike Bridge you don’t have a partner - so if you make mistakes - it’s OK - Competitive players will be happy to play with you, because it means they’re more likely to win.

Why are there different spellings for Mah Jongg?

The American version of the game is usually spelled Mah Jongg (you may also see it written as Mahjongg or Mah-Jongg). Other variations - such as Hong Kong-are generally spelled Mahjong.

American Mah Jongg and The National Mah Jongg League (NMJL)

/

Card is also available in Large Print Format - which we use

The National Mah Jongg league was founded in 1937 to standardize the game so that all Mah Jongg players would play the same hands and rules using 152 Tiles and Jokers. Each year, The League publishes a new card in March with Standard Hands and Rules. They sell merchandise in addition to the cards and also offer an online version of the game on their website - National Mah Jongg League

Want to get started? You need a card from the National Mah Jongg League - a set and we like to use a pad also - but any table cloth will do - We also like to use a bag to mix up the tiles - but again - you can shuffle on the table

Play On Line

Real MahJongg On Line - on this site you play American Mah Jongg and use your NMJL card and you can play with friends who are also logged on or against Bots - This is how we played during Covid. Great for practice -

Curious about Hong Kong Mahjong?

Hong Kong Mahjong uses 144 tiles and no jokers or racks - You can play Hong Kong Mahjong with an American set - but you will need to set aside the joker tiles and you don’t need the NMJL card. Hong Kong Mahjong is little like Gin Rummy -each player starts with 13 tiles and tries to make combinations with their hand. This link has good instructions.
