Splash Fabric

I have something for all you Kindle readers out there…..Hipster Bags from Splash Fabric are just the right size to carry your Kindle and phone and earbuds without hands, thanks to generous Cross Body Strap., so you are ready for anything. I can also fit in my mask and keys. If I have to carry more than that, I slip the hipster, with my essentials into a larger tote or bag. In the summer, when I am less likely to have pockets, I use it all day. Because it is waterproof, it is also handy for beach and poolside. Sand does not stick to it.

Hipster from Splash Fabric

It’s waterproof like oil cloth, but softer. The creators tell us that they couldn’t find the fabric they wanted, so they created it. It’s certified toxin free so it is kid safe. For your sewers out there – it it comes by the yard and is sewable too, They have free patterns on their web site. Link to the website below.

We grew up with oil cloth -Stiff and non flexible, but we covered tables with it to make them easy to wipe down. We even covered plywood with it using thumb tacks to create impromptu counters. Back in the day when our washer and dryer were in the kitchen we covered them with a plywood/oil cloth board to create more counter space. Eventually they would crack and peel and need to be replaced.

For a while I could still find oil cloth table cloths at The Vermont Country Store -they got me through the 80s and 90s, when I had toddlers. No longer made with linseed oil – they are now known as laminated cloth. They still carry table clothes, but they are stiff and hard to fold. Over at Harrod’s they called it glossy fabric -You could find Liberty print Aprons and tote bags.

Splash Fabric and other Laminated Fabric makers have ushered in a new era. I’ll take one in every pattern, but the whales will always be my favorite .
