February always comes and goes quickly, but this year it left a snowy impression - breaking snowfall records all over New England. We won’t be seeing snowdrops for another week, but hope is on the horizon with Daylight Savings Time this weekend.
When: The change occurs at 2:00 AM on March 8, 2026, when clocks move to 3:00 AM.
Sunrise: Generally shifts from ~6:20 AM to ~7:20 AM.
Sunset: Generally shifts from ~5:40 PM to ~6:40 PM.
Exception: Arizona and Hawaii who do not observe this time
You can thank Benjamin Franklin for inventing the concept in 1784 to economize candle usage and make greater usage of daylight during the warmer months of the year. Daylight Savings Time was formally adopted during World War I as apart of a global attempt to conserve energy.
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises trying to slowly adjust your schedule in the days leading up to the time change, by going to bed 15-20 minutes earlier each day. If possible also adjust your meals and exercise schedule and get plenty of quality sleep beforehand - If you are already sleep deprived when the clocks change it will exacerbate the lost hour of sleep when the clocks spring forward.
On February 4, 2026, the Daylight Act of 2026 was introduced in the House of Representatives. The bill would permanently shift clocks by 30 minutes - aiming to split the difference between standard and time and daylight savings time, however, the legislations has not been brought up for a vote in the house to date.
Why do we say O’Clock? It’s a shortened form of the phrase “ of the clock” which people began using to communicate the time after the invention of clocks.
