The best of autumn

The leaves are starting to fall in our neck of the woods. The weather has been sunny and warm. We call them Goldilocks days.- Not too hot, not too cold. First the acorns drop like fat rain drops and the chipmunks and squirrels scramble to keep up with the bounty.

Next our drive becomes a carpet of pine needles, soft underfoot. When the wind picks up the leaves come with it. Slowly twisting in the breeze before landing- It’s like being inside a snow globe of leaves or a slow motion rainstorm as they fill the air and gravity does the rest. You can’t help but to stop and marvel at the show.
The Japanese call it Forest Bathing. The simple act of being still in nature with trees for a few minutes. A practice I recommend in all seasons, but especially appreciate in the fall.
I try to keep the landscapers and their leaf blowers at bay, for as long as I can, so we can savor the crunch of the fallen leaves underfoot and marvel at all the different shades, shapes and sizes. The pinecones will drop next. When our children were younger we were creative with nature’s fall gifts, mode podge glue and wax paper. Some of my favorites follow.
